AKM Consulting Engineers is a multi-disciplined professional organization that specializes in providing water resources engineering and related services to public agencies.  The scope of services offered by AKM includes all facets of planning, modeling, design and construction support and management for potable water, recycled water, wastewater and drainage projects.  AKM works in a team-based environment with multi-disciplinary responsibilities being shared as appropriate.

Job Description

AKM is seeking a Principal Engineer with previous experience in water, recycled water, wastewater, and stormwater/storm drain systems.  Work will be conducted under the direction of the President/Principal in Charge.  In addition to technical abilities, an ideal candidate will have excellent communications and writing skills; be able to assist in working directly with clients via email, meetings, and phone conversations; and be able to document work efforts in report format.

Typical tasks will include the following:

  • Responsible for the highly complex and large engineering projects
  • Supervising staff in the delivery of public works projects
  • Manage the planning, design, and construction of projects in the areas of water resources engineering including but not limited to pipelines (water, recycled water, wastewater), pump stations (water, recycled water, wastewater, and stormwater), reservoirs, wells, treatment, and stormdrain/stormwater facilities.
  • Identify technical issues
  • Oversee preparation of reports
  • Provide insight and support for Construction Management Division including review of submittals, assistance during bidding, and requests for clarification
  • Provide support in
    • Submittal of reports
    • Preparing Requests for Proposals
    • Developing interview presentations
  • Manage and supervise engineering staff assigned to the respective areas of work
  • Ability to provide civil engineering services
    • Analyze problems and prepare written and oral reports
    • Resolve technical issues in design and construction
    • Supervise the work of others
    • Select and maintain filing systems
    • Analyze and solve difficult engineering problems by arriving at valid conclusions
    • Communicate effectively
    • Present issues and recommendations
    • Supervise and maintain effective working relationships
  • Support staff in the organization of project budgets and schedules and provides guidance for the delivery of projects on time and within budget
  • Provide guidance, decision-making, and training to staff is all aspects of project implementation and contact services
  • Provide plan check and specifications to ensure quality and technically sound projects
  • Assume personal responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in an efficient manner
  • Procure, manage, and administer contract services necessary for planning, designing and constructing public works projects and reports
  • Prepare Requests for Proposals
  • Preparation of engineering design drawings, specifications and cost estimates
  • Establish project budgets and schedules for their delivery
  • Prepare project feasibility studies and work related technical research, reports and correspondence
  • Review related technical documents and reports
  • Coordinates with Federal, State, County, regulatory and grant agencies as necessary for the delivery of capital projects
  • Participate in relevant meetings, prepare progress reports and comply with required QA/QC procedures

 

Qualifications

A minimum of ______ years of experience in the position of Senior Civil Engineer or a higher classification is required, as is a minimum of _______ years in a supervisory position

Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California is required

A minimum of _________ years of experience working for a water utility company, water district and/or a local agency’s water engineering or utilities division

Knowledge of: State, Federal and locally applicable statues, policies, standards, ordinances and regulations related to civil engineering practices of public agencies; municipal public works administration; principles of planning, controlling, and organizing activities of a major civil engineering section; engineering design and analysis; traffic engineering; construction contract law; principles of cost accounting; supervisory techniques; public speaking techniques; and budget preparation and administration practices; public works construction methods, design and materials; and principles and practices of personnel management and supervision

Competent use of relevant software such as MS Office Suite and civil engineering specific software
