The purpose of the project was to replace the existing pump station with a new facility incorporating four (4) new VFD operated pumps capable of covering the entire range of demands. The project includes a 500 kW diesel generator located in the area of the existing control building to operate the facility during commercial power outages.
AKM prepared a preliminary design report; subsequent plans, specifications, and estimates; and compete construction management and inspection services for the project.
The project required the demolition of the existing pumps, piping, control building, fencing and paving; construction of a new 2,000 square foot architecturally treated booster pump station building with an air-conditioned electrical room; four new 125 hp vertical turbine pumps (1900 gpm capacity each); 24-inch suction and discharge piping, flow meter, and combination altitude valve/back pressure valve; new 1,000 amp meter and main switchboard, motor control center, and four 125 hp variable frequency drives with bypass solid state starters; security system consisting of video cameras and intrusion switches for building doors and reservoir hatches; provisions for conversion to solar power in the future; paving of the pump station yard and reservoir perimeter road; rehabilitation of the Reservoir No. 1 vent; and valve replacement in Euclid Street. Also included in the project were the reservoir cathodic protection system, and seismic retrofit of piping to the 5 mg steel reservoir. The new pump station includes a TESCO 2000 PLC/control panel for operation of the booster station and communication via fiber optic cable with the City’s SCADA base station.
AKM provided complete construction management and inspection of the facility.
This project encompasses all tasks included under Water Production, Storage and Conveyance; Structural Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Surveying; Geotechnical Services; Facilities Improvements; and Construction Management Services. It was completed to full satisfaction of the City of Fountain Valley.
